Symptoms for Hyperhidrosis
The medical term for excessive sweating, hyperhidrosis, is diagnosed as a condition where the body sweats beyond its physiological needs. The sweating is uncontrolled, meaning it can happen at any time, without any specific reason. People who have hyperhidrosis may sweat profusely on areas of the body not necessarily known for such sweating, such as the hands or feet. The condition is not dangerous, but can be a source of anxiety to those affected by it, especially in cases of excessive armpit sweating.
Symptoms include excessively sweaty palms, soles of the feet and the underarms. What is considered too much? There is no predetermined amount, however if it causes problems or distress to the point of avoiding normal activity, then this might be the case.
The worst part about this condition is the affect it has psychologically. It can really affect one’s quality of life because of the extreme embarrassment suffered from things that people without this condition would never think twice about – shaking hands, for example, or constantly changing clothes because of sweat showing. Until recently, it was probably very frustrating to deal with too, because the medical community did not take it seriously (unless there was a medical cause).
No one knows what causes hyperhidrosis, but it has been known to be a genetically inherited condition. There also seems to be no difference between male or female, or race. Different methods have been used to successfully treat excessive sweating, depending on the severity of the problem and the body part involved.
There are herbal remedies, oral medications, lotions and recently, Botox injections. The effectiveness and time periods of the success may vary between individuals, but the good news is that there are new breakthroughs being made all of the time.
